“This shows what can be achieved very quickly when a Labour Council works hand-in-hand with a Labour Government on a shared objective.”
– Cllr Mike Stonard, Labour Leader of Norwich City Council
It has been confirmed today that Homes England, the government’s housing and regeneration agency, has awarded Labour-run Norwich City Council an additional £19m from its Housing Infrastructure Fund towards the regeneration of Anglia Square. This bring the total grant they have awarded the project to £34m.
Cllr Mike Stonard, Labour Leader of Norwich City Council, says:
“This is a fantastic start to the New Year. It is thanks to the government that we have the funding to crack on and start building the new Anglia Square with hundreds of affordable homes for local people.
Norwich has always been innovative, progressive and has been at the vanguard of change over the years and now we are leading the way in building hundreds of new homes.
This shows what can be achieved very quickly when a Labour Council works hand-in-hand with a Labour Government on a shared objective. Only a Labour-led council could have delivered this for local people.”
In December 2024, it was announced that Norwich City Council had been able to purchase Anglia Square using grant funding from Homes England. The total funding provided will cover the costs for acquisition, demolition and remediation to bring forward the development of Anglia Square. This follows years of uncertainty and unsuccessful attempts at redevelopment by the private sector.
The council is now set to lead on regeneration of the site for the benefit of the local community, and will move at pace based on the current planning consent.
Successful redevelopment of the site – which is planned to include 1100 new homes as well as retail, office and leisure space, landscaped gardens, cycle routes and public realm improvements – will provide hundreds of much-needed affordable homes and hundreds of jobs.
Demolition is expected to proceed in the spring. The council is working with existing tenants and businesses to provide support and assistance with relocation: including the option to relocate nearby to a planned box park close to Anglia Square.
